Background of the study

Phonetic variation in digital communication is increasingly evident as online platforms reshape traditional speech patterns. In Nigeria, TikTok videos have emerged as influential mediums where users engage in creative phonetic expression through lip syncs, voiceovers, and mimetic sound alterations. These videos often showcase innovative pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns that diverge from standard speech, reflecting the influence of digital performance culture (Akinyemi, 2023). TikTok’s rapid, visually oriented format encourages users to experiment with their vocal delivery to enhance entertainment value and audience engagement. This study aims to compare the phonetic features observed in TikTok videos with those of conventional spoken language among Nigerian users. By analyzing audio recordings and user interactions, the research seeks to identify specific phonetic shifts that occur in the digital environment, including modifications in accent, intonation, and articulation (Ibrahim, 2024). Such changes may be influenced by factors such as cultural identity, peer imitation, and the interactive nature of digital media. Ultimately, this study will contribute to our understanding of digital phonetics and the broader implications of social media on language evolution in Nigeria (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the growing popularity of TikTok and its evident impact on speech, there is limited research examining the specific phonetic variations that emerge from Nigerian TikTok videos. Existing studies tend to focus on visual trends or broader language changes, leaving a gap in our understanding of how digital audio content influences pronunciation and other phonetic parameters (Chinwe, 2023). This gap hinders the development of effective models to explain digital phonetic innovation, as educators and linguists lack comprehensive data on the articulatory modifications induced by social media (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to address these limitations by providing a comparative analysis of phonetic variation in TikTok videos versus traditional speech patterns.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze phonetic variations in Nigerian TikTok videos.

2. To compare digital phonetic patterns with traditional speech.

3. To develop models explaining the influence of digital media on phonetics.

Research questions

1. What phonetic variations are observable in TikTok videos?

2. How do these variations compare to conventional pronunciation?

3. What factors contribute to these phonetic changes?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines phonetic variation in Nigerian social media audio through a comparative analysis of TikTok videos, offering insights into digital sound innovation. The findings will advance sociophonetic theory and inform language teaching strategies, ensuring educators and policymakers can adapt to evolving digital speech patterns (Akinyemi, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing phonetic variation in TikTok videos by Nigerian users, excluding other digital media and offline speech contexts.

Definitions of terms

• Phonetic Variation: Differences in the production and perception of speech sounds.

• TikTok Videos: Short, user generated videos on the TikTok platform.

• Digital Phonetics: The study of phonetic patterns as influenced by digital communication.
